Geostationary extReme UltraViolet Imager (GRUVI), Instrument Request for Information
This RFI—not a request for proposal—seeks industry information on capabilities, interest, and options for a solar-observing Space Weather Next Geostationary extreme ultraviolet imager (GRUVI) for a future operational NOAA space weather mission supporting NWS and SWPC forecasts and alerts. The instrument should resolve solar features including coronal holes, filaments/prominences, active regions, CMEs, and X10-class flares, with spectral bands selected to discriminate plasma temperatures and phenomena. Contractor support is needed for a Phase A study because the required capabilities are not currently within the NASA/NOAA workforce, and the government also wants to assess contractor capability to manufacture GRUVI. The government anticipates multiple awards for the Formulation/Risk reduction phase under a planned fixed-price contract, with possible priced or unpriced options and consideration of a contractor-proposed pre-priced option to retire implementation risk. At Phase A conclusion, an industry partner is expected to be ready to enter a System Requirements Review about one month after implementation contract award, followed by a Preliminary Design Review.
