Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Servicing
NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center has issued a request for information, not a solicitation, seeking industry input on potential Hubble Space Telescope (HST) missions to boost its orbit, perform on-orbit servicing, and/or conduct controlled reentry or disposal. The envisioned effort could develop, test, and operate a servicing vehicle to capture HST in low Earth orbit and boost it to at least 600 km, enhance HST performance and resilience/lifetime, or perform controlled reentry, without harming the observatory; the mission is expected to occur by 2032. NASA notes a July 2026 lifetime analysis found a 10% probability of HST reentry by September 2032 and 50% by December 2033, and HST has no propulsion and would otherwise reenter uncontrolled. The contractor would provide the launch vehicle, spacecraft, crew if applicable, and servicing-vehicle mission operations, while NASA would provide HST technical information, expert consultation, and coordinated operations. Interested respondents should describe their ability and experience for any or all mission options, technical approach and TRL, risk mitigation, earliest service date, cost/payment assumptions, expected NASA contributions/resources, partners, business size/socioeconomic status, and input on small-business subcontracting goals and barriers.
