An autotransfusion system collects blood lost during an operation and is processed by the disposables specific to the machine, and concentrated (washed) red cells are returned to the patient while damaged cells are discarded in the process. Cell saving is a common practice in cardiac surgery, and other operations where heavy blood loss is possible. Returning the patient's own blood reduces the need for blood transfusions, and also reduces risk to patients due to transfusion complications/infections.
