The individually ventilated rodent caging will be used by multiple investigators for approved clinical research protocols to house research mouse models and the rabbit caging will replace aging rabbit cages that do not allow for social housing. 1.2 Scope of Work Multiple investigators at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical center use mice for their research models and currently one investigator has two protocols utilizing rabbits for a research model. The facility currently uses the Tecniplast SealSafe Plus individually ventilated caging for all rodents and possesses four air handling units and 8 Sealsafe DGM racks for mouse caging. All mice are currently housed in the Sealsafe rat individually ventilated caging. We have had a significant increase in the mouse population due to increased number of investigators, funding and research protocols. With this increase, we require additional individually ventilated racks to house the mice. The Tecniplast SealSafet DGM racks are the only racks that will work with our current air handling units and are interchangeable with all room systems. The ventilated racks increase protection from allergens providing a safer work environment for the animals and the VMU staff utilizing HEPA filters for supply and exhaust air. The Tecniplast rat and Tecniplast mouse caging systems share water bottles, sippers, cage card holders and air handling units so purchasing this same sysstem makes for greater efficiency during cage changes and monetary savings in the future. The six (6) Rabbit 4470R caging provides a cage system for rabbits that allows for social housing and enrichment. This will replace our aging stainless steel rabbit cages that are not designed for social housing, which is suggested by The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. This caging is provided in one cage system of 3 cages, as opposed to our current 6 cage system, which will be much more maneuverable, more quiet and lighter for all research personnel. The system has built in rest benches, plastic waste trays and two bottle holders. Our current system has stainless steel waste trays that easily warp and are unwieldy to maneuver. Finally, this system uses Tecniplast water bottles and waste trays that fit in our current bottle racks and presentation racks which will provide greater efficiency and monetary savings in the future.
