The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), has a requirement to remove existing Railings in the ATCT stairwell and replace with new railings meeting NFPA 101 Fire Life Safety code at Joint Base Andrews Air Traffic Control Tower BLDG 1216 Andrews AFB, MD. Remove the existing steel railings from the stairwell in the ATCT. The paint on the existing railings is known to contain trace amounts of lead. Precautions need to be taken when cutting the railings from the existing mounts. The railings will need to be replaced in sections. All sections removed during a day’s work will be replaced by the end of the shift or temporary rails/guards installed such that no section be without guards. New rails will be constructed of 1 ¼" STD steel pipe. Sections of rails will be shop welded and connected in the field by mechanical means. No welding will be done in the tower. New rails will be painted with high performance paint as per stated in the SOW.
