The project will replace the deficient Holzwarth Culvert, a six-barrel corrugated metal arch pipe culvert on Holzwarth Access Road, with a new steel girder bridge and cast-in-place concrete deck in Rocky Mountain National Park about nine miles north of Grand Lake, CO, along US Hwy 34 at 8,900 feet elevation. Work includes removing the existing culvert, constructing new abutments and micropiles, temporary stream diversion and riprap, aggregate roadway surfacing, relocating an existing electrical line, and relocating historic head gates into a new concrete slab. Access is constrained: the site is reachable on foot a quarter mile past a locked gate at the south end of the Holzwarth Historic Site Parking Lot, the access road is about 13 feet wide with tight turns requiring temporary widening and a truck turnaround, and no construction access is allowed more than 100 feet west of the bridge. Principal work items include bridge removal, 120 tons of roadway aggregate, one prefabricated steel bridge (10 feet wide by 48 feet long modular steel vehicular bridge), 180 linear feet of 8.68-inch micropile, and temporary stream diversion. Anticipated schedule advertises September 2026, awards/NTP December 2026, and contract completion November 2027, with total estimated cost between $700,000 and $2,000,000.
