Competent paid tax return preparers are essential to accurate return preparation, improved tax compliance, effective tax administration, and protection of taxpayers from preparer errors. The Return Preparer Office’s (RPO) mission is to improve taxpayer compliance by providing oversight and support of tax professionals. The RPO oversees continuing education (CE) programs for Enrolled Agents (EA) and Enrolled Retirement Plan Agents (ERPA). It is mandatory that EAs and ERPAs take continuing education from IRS approved CE Providers. Both EAs and ERPAs must complete 72 hours of continuing education triennially. Additionally, the IRS has an Annual Filing Season Program designed to encourage non-credentialed return preparers to voluntarily complete continuing education courses. In general, the requirement for participating in the program is 18 hours of continuing education from IRS approved CE Providers (Providers), including a six-hour Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) course and passing an associated comprehension test. Approximately 500 to 650 CE Providers have registered with the IRS annually since RPO first procured Contractor support to register and annually renew CE Providers in 2011.
