Post and Rail Fence Material Specifications Fence Material Description Lumber: Posts and rails shall be of ponderosa or lodgepole pine, Douglas fir, southern yellow pine, or western hemlock, and uniform in diameter from tip to butt. Posts shall be round with a chamfered or domed top, and doweled to receive three rails. Rails shall be round and have tenoned ends to fit securely into the doweled posts. Bark shall be removed. Preservative Treatment: Pressure treat all lumber with a waterborne preservative. Preservative chemicals can be CA, MCA, ACQ, or MCQ. Dimensions: Posts: 5 inch to 5.5 inch diameter x 6.5 to 7 foot length* Rails: 3.5 inch to 4 inch diameter x 10 foot length* *Vendor can select which diameter within this range to offer, but the entire order must contain rails and posts of the same diameter.
