The requirement is to provide updated ocean and atmospheric models within the University of Massachusetts Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) framework and WRF weather model to reflect the impacts the wind turbines may have on the winds, and sea surface temperatures. The FVCOM model covers the shelf regions off MA and RI and is heavily used in SAROPS for wind speed and direction for search object drift in this region. The WRF model includes wind farm parameterization, including wind turbine power curves (relationship between wind speed and power production of the turbine), drag and turbulence. Wind turbines may affect the winds and currents in this region, therefore impacting how and where a search object will drift. UMASS University developed and has operated the FVCOM ocean forecast model since 1999. The model has been approved by CG-SAR for use within SAROPS since 2014. UMASS validated the FVCOM model with support from CG-SAR. The primary deliverable is the oceanographic and atmospheric project data from the model.
