The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Winchester Engineering and Analytical Center’s (WEAC) Hotlab and Ashing room is used to process radioactive regulatory samples and certified standards containing volatile radioactive components and dusty samples. These items are nearly always processed in the Hotlab fume hoods or the Ashing room. According to NRC regulations FDA must ensure that limits to the general public are not exceeded due to effluent release. Detail description is available under 10 CFR Appendix B to Part 20—Annual Limits on Intake (ALIs) and Derived Air Concentrations (DACs) of Radionuclides for Occupational Exposure; Effluent Concentrations; Concentrations for Release to Sewerage. This requirement is for the installation of 2 shrouded probes specifically designed to sample air quantitatively based on ductwork cross sectional area and flow rates.
