Description: Metabolomic Assays This is a Small Business Sources Sought notice. This is NOT a solicitation for proposals, proposal abstracts, or quotations. The purpose of this notice is to obtain information regarding: (1) the availability and capability of qualified small business sources; (2) whether they are small businesses; HUBZone small businesses; service-disabled, veteran-owned small businesses; 8(a) small businesses; veteran-owned small businesses; woman-owned small businesses; or small disadvantaged businesses; and (3) their size classification relative to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code for the proposed acquisition. Your responses to the information requested will assist the Government in determining the appropriate acquisition method, including whether a set-aside is possible. An organization that is not considered a small business under the applicable NAICS code should not submit a response to this notice. This notice is issued to help determine the availability of qualified companies technically capable of meeting the Government requirement and to determine the method of acquisition. Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by a progressive decline in memory and other impaired cognitive abilities ultimately affecting daily function. One of the earliest behavioral manifestations of AD includes poor performance in non-cognitive domains, such as slow gait, but whether all individuals who develop AD experience gait decline before developing the cognitive outcome is little understood. We hypothesize that individuals who develop both cognitive and mobility problems in the clinical course to dementia represent a specific subgroup that develop AD, and they may be characterized by specific metabolic disorders that affect brain health and other aspects that negatively affect mobility. In the BLSA, we used quantitative metabolomics to test this central hypothesis. Given sample size limitations of BLSA and the highly selective nature of the study sample, we aim to validate findings obtained in the BLSA using data from the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study. We hypothesize that metabolic signatures identified in the BLSA would also predict subsequent dual decline. The main goals are in the Health ABC study, 1) identify phenotypic groups using cognitive and motor performance trajectories before developing dementia, 2) evaluate predictive associations between metabolomic profiles and subsequent dual decline and 3) compare identified predictive profiles with those identified in BLSA. Purpose and Objectives: The purpose of this requirement is to perform metabolomic assays in the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study (Health ABC) to validate metabolomic signatures underlying dual cognitive and gait decline that are identified in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging and validate their relationships with subsequent dementia.
