This machine has improved processing power and storage capabilities compared to the S5 that is currently used in the lab and will reduce turnaround time by at least 50%. This machine can scale up and down sequencing depending on required needs (e.g., clinical high coverage sequencing requiring 100 million reads, or reference sequencing requiring 2 million reads) in as little as 4 hours. The S5 Plus from ThermoFisher is required to work with the Ion Chef) instrument that is currently used to prepare sequencing libraries and chips. No other competitor instruments are compatible with the Ion Chef. Competitor instrumentation requires 18 hours for similar data generation. The Ion Torrent machinery and systems are presently used, and this replacement machine is for exclusive use with instrumentation already present in the lab and workflow.
