The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation’s leading medical research agency and the primary Federal agency whose mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge. The mission of the NIH also includes enhancing health, lengthening life, reducing illness and disability, conducting, supporting and making medical discoveries that improves and saves people’s health and lives. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is a part of the NIH, with a mission to catalyze the generation of innovative methods and technologies that will enhance the development, testing, and implementation of diagnostics and therapeutics across a wide range of human diseases and conditions. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is arguably the most powerful analytical tool a chemist has at their disposal for the identification and confirmation of organic molecules. Medicinal chemists at DPI use the NMR instruments daily to collect compound data, as well as conduct more advanced NMR experiments overnight. Constant access to fully functioning NMR instruments is imperative to maintain productivity in the successful pursuit of the Division of Preclinical Innovation (DPI) mission. With continual advancements in chemical and pharmaceutical research, NMR systems have improved and evolved to meet expanding and changing needs. It is crucial that the medicinal chemists at DPI have access to the latest NMR technologies to streamline and simplify their analytical chemistry workflows. Energizing to superconductivity requires the magnet to be cooled to 4 K, which is only achieved and maintained through the use of cryogenic liquids, specifically liquid helium and liquid nitrogen. As such, the ACC requires liquid helium to be used in the magnetization of the NMR instruments in B1 and CLL Labs.
