The Imaging Physics Laboratory of BBC, NHLBI is in the process of implementing a second iteration of an ultra-high resolution CT imaging technology for body CT scans in patients with cystic lung diseases. The technology was invented by DIR/NHLBI. In the clinical trial of the first iteration, it showed superior image resolution than current CT scanners and the compatibility with standard clinical CT scanners, and ultimately the potential for more precise characterization of the disease and assessment of treatment. The trial also revealed several aspects for immediate improvement. One of which is better handling of the additional detector insert into the CT scanner for a smoother workflow and more accurate positioning of the imaged area. This involves the design and fabrication of a low-profile enclosure for the detector insert which contains a motorized positioning system for the detector. The objectives of this mechanical system is to allow the detector insert to be moved to a pre-determined position under the patient's body precisely without the need to move the patient from the CT bed, and to be fully compatible with the operation of the existing NHLBI clinical CT scanner.
