The Cell Biology Section (CBS) of NIDCR is responsible for investigating cell interactions with the surrounding microenvironment associated with single and collective cell migration in three dimensions (3D) as well as studying the development of salivary glands. Over the past 6 years the evolution of benchtop 3D bioprinters in the market has grown and made controlled manipulation of a 3D microenvironment for organ development or testing fundamental processes of cell biology possible without the requirement of a full biomaterials laboratory. Due to this recent interest in the use of 3D biomaterials in cell and developmental biology the CBS is looking to stay competitive it the field and expand into using printable 3D biomaterials from collagens to hydroxyapatite.
