The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Acquisition Services (OAS) on behalf of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) intends to award a sole source firm fixed priced simplified purchase order for a the purchase of an Olympus inverted microscope. This microscope is a replacement for an older Olympus inverted microscope. The old scope has condenser problems that cannot be repaired. It has a camera and proprietary software. All of the other light microscopes have the same camera software so images taken before the new microscope is acquired would be functional on the new microscope and comparable between instruments. This is for a core facility and multiple users are already trained on the Olympus camera and software so they would not require additional training for a new system. Having the same camera will allow capabilities to switch cameras between scopes if one camera were to break so all equipment will remain available if needed. Camera repair can require it being shipped back to Japan and can take a few months. Also components such as objectives and fluorescent cubes can be switched between microscopes to prevent a lapse in operation. B&B Microscopes sn the only authorized Olympus dealer that serves our area. Additionally Leica and Zeiss would require a different camera and software system then what is currently being used.
