HL7 standards are utilized by CDC programs in the development of the many disease reporting/surveillance systems used by our state and local health departments. HL7 is the primary Standards Development Organization (SDO) that offers valuable health information technology standards resources and services for healthcare providers, government stakeholders, payers, pharmaceutical companies, vendors/suppliers, and consulting firms. As members, CDC programs can use these standards as needed to support data exchange across public health and healthcare. The membership provides opportunity for CDC to leverage the expertise of HL7 and industry partners to develop implementation guides more efficiently and effectively to meet the needs of our partners in data exchange activities. HL7 is uniquely positioned to engage critical industry partners to include the vendor community in developing public health information systems. HL7 can help manage implementation costs and speed time to market, learn best practices from industry, and influence the technical and policy environment of the future by voting on standards.
