The NEDSS Base System (NBS) is a case-based disease surveillance system developed and supported by the CDC to collect, monitor, analyze and report nationally notifiable and state reportable diseases/conditions. NBS is currently being used by 20 states, DC, and 5 U.S. Territories. One of the responsibilities of the NBS project is to implement standardized messaging guides called Message Mapping Guides (MMGs) with in the system that allows jurisdictions (users of NBS) to collect and report standardized data for notifiable diseases. The NBS contract has been implementing MMGs by developing Page Templates for each disease and supporting jurisdictions in the implementation of the Pages in their environments and going through the CDC onboarding/validation process to send the data based on the requirements outlined in the MMGs. Another priority for NBS is to modernize the Extract Transfer and Load (ETL) process in NBS by redesigning the process using new technologies. These enhancements and support activities within NBS have been prioritized by the CDC leadership to support the Data Modernization Initiative. In addition, the NBS system is also being enhanced to meet the demands for collecting, analyzing and reporting COVID-19 data. Funds will be added to address system updates and enhancements that will help the jurisdictions to effectively use the system for the COVID-19 response.
