The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a national laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), operated by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC. NREL advances the science and engineering of energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable power technologies and provides the knowledge to integrate and optimize energy systems. Located in the foothills of Golden, Colorado, NREL is the only federal laboratory dedicated to the research, development, commercialization, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The vision of NREL is a clean energy future for the world. Achieving this vision is made possible by the commitment and competence of NREL’s operations team. As the laboratory grows and scales its work, NREL’s operations teams are reinventing how we deliver that work, collectively striving toward client-oriented systems, processes, and coordination across our institution. As NREL grows and demand for expertise in renewable energy markets accelerates, the operations teams perform in parallel to accelerate our operational functions and collectively achieve our mission. NREL’s operations span a large range of activities crucial to performance, compliance, and accountability which are foundational to NREL’s success in advancing critical objectives and priorities. NREL is currently in the process of re-designing how systems and support structures can adapt to better facilitate research in a safe, efficient, mature and productive way. To date, this transformation has entailed developing its project financial and people scheduling software using Oracle Enterprise Performance Management (EPM). A second effort is currently underway focused on developing software/processes intended to help plan and manage “Work Planning and Control” in which laboratory space, maintenance, and safety processes and technology will be streamlined.
