BACKGROUND: SLAC is operated by Stanford University as a contractor for the United States Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC). SLAC seeks to increase the maximum X-ray energy capability of an existing hard X-Ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facility through the implementation of its LINAC Coherent Light Source II High Energy (LCLS-II-HE) Project. A Low Emittance Injector Tunnel (LEIT) will be part of the supporting infrastructure for the LCLS-II-HE Upgrade. The LEIT will house a lower emittance electron beam source (injector), which is required to achieve the upgrade. Correspondingly, the LEIT Project comprises the design and construction of the tunnel and supporting infrastructure for the injector. The LEIT will be located on the west side of the (SLAC) Campus in Menlo Park, California. REQUIREMENTS: The LEIT Project comprises an approximately 220-foot-long reinforced concrete tunnel structure with internal clear dimensions of 14-feet wide by 14-feet high, to be sited on the north side of the existing LINAC housing. There will be a 2-story west portal entrance and east egress stairwell shaft. The LEIT will be fully waterproofed to prevent ground water from entering the tunnel and stairwell enclosures. The LEIT will connect to the existing housing by means of a transfer tunnel with inner clear dimensions of approximately 9-feet wide by 9-feet tall. The LEIT will focus on the heavy civil infrastructure, some mechanical, electrical, security cameras, and fire protection to provide minimum life safety requirements for the tunnel.
