NREL’s Distributed Integrated Energy Lab (DIEL) project at the Flatirons Campus, is creating a grid emulator system that will allow for both Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (C-HIL) and Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (P-HIL) testing and validation at NREL’s Flatirons Campus. DIEL is a research facility interconnecting various multi-kW to MW-scale generation sources (wind, solar, waterpower), loads, and other assets. OBJECTIVE: The grid emulator system will consist of two subsystems that need the following: A 400 kVA rated AC power amplifier system which will be installed in a building at the Flatirons Facility and connected to existing generation assets and the controlled grid interface. A mobile AC power amplifier system rated to 60 kVA which should be relatively easy to move between different test buildings.
