The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a department of energy funded synchrotron facility that provides users from around the world access to the brightest beams of soft x-rays, together with hard x-rays and infrared, for scientific research and technology development in a wide range of disciplines. The upgraded ALS will include a new beamline called "FLEXON”. The desired photon energy range for the FLEXON beamline is 400-1400 eV and over this spectral region all linear polarization directions shall be available. This includes any tilting direction between the 0 degrees found at planar polarized light and the +/- 90 degrees found at vertically polarized light. Elliptical polarization, with the two extreme points planar polarization and vertical polarization, will also be available over the spectral region with the exception of 100% circular polarization. For 100% circular polarization the upper end of the photon energy range is given by the fundamental harmonic of the undulator and it depends directly on the period length of the undulator. The FLEXON beamline may be served by an elliptically polarizing undulator of APPLE II type (EPU). The scope of the contemplated delivery is the FLEXON EPU described in this document, including the required review process and documentation, within the foreseen delivery time of 18 months after receiving order.
