Sources are being sought to provided engineering and procurement support for a fire barrier door and door frame for the U1a Complex Underground new fire barrier. This General Service scope supports the new U1a Shaft Station New Fire Barrier at the Nevada National Security Site outside Las Vegas, Nevada. The U1a Complex is a Hazard Category 2 complex located in Area 1 of the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). The NNSS is managed by Mission Support and Test Services (MSTS), and will be the contracting entity. The facility is approximately 25 miles north of Mercury, Nevada, and 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. Background A new fire barrier is being installed in an underground tunnel (approx. 1000-ft under the surface). The tunnel is 13.5-ft wide x 13.5-ft tall, with a 7.75-ft radius arched back (ceiling). The new fire barrier in the tunnel is approximately 8-in thick and will include a double-leaf fire door of 8.5-ft tall and 8-ft wide (each leaf is 4-ft wide). The door leaves open in the same direction. The fire barrier is rated for 2-hr, and the door assembly will need to be UL listed and 1.5-hour rated. The fire door assembly shall meet the requirements of NFPA 80 and 101, at a minimum. A fire damper is included within the barrier to allow for free ventilation during normal operation, but closes during an activation signal at the same time as the fire doors. The area of the damper is 2-ft x 3-ft. During certain times of the year, there is a natural ventilation current through the tunnel that reaches up to 88,000 cfm. This air current flows in the direction of closing the double-leaf fire door. At other times of the year, the air current direction can be reversed to flow against the door closing, with a maximum flowrate of 30,000 cfm. Scope We are seeking both Engineering technical services to determine the maximum forces on the operating fire doors (opening and closing), to determine a fire door design that can meet these operating conditions, and to help procure the UL listed fire barrier door and door frame. The fire door assembly shall include all required accessories (crash bar, automatic mechanical door closures, etc).
