The Naval Nuclear Lab is interested in innovations to enable lighter equipment and structures for propulsion systems, support structures and foundations. Improved Structure Design Design innovations are being sought. For example: 1. Novel designs, materials and manufacturing methods that enable lower weight without compromising stiffness and damping. 2. Redesign efforts with topological optimization can be time consuming and inefficient because the optimized product (e.g., in its triangulated surface form) cannot be readily used in typical commercial analysis tools (Creo, Abaqus, Ansys CFX, etc.). The result needs to be interpreted and manually converted into a parametric feature-based Computer Aided Design (CAD) model. Innovative automated computational solutions to improve the conversion are being sought. Equipment and Structure Dual-Use In some naval vessels bulkheads serve as fuel storage; in aircraft wings serve as fuel storage. Innovations that achieve weight reduction by extending this dual use concept are being sought. For example: 1. Replace component structure by re-using existing structures and foundations. 2. Explore weight and volume reduction opportunities by combining or designing integral components. Improved Pressure Vessel Design Design, material, and manufacturing innovations to reduce the weight of pressure vessels are being sought. For example: 1. Improved mechanical joint designs to enable lower weight non-welded pressure vessel heads 2. Lighter weight pressure vessels enabled by additive or other advanced manufacturing methods Pre-Proposal Conference: Question & Answer Session A pre-proposal conference will be conducted to discuss the proposed work area and answer any questions with respect to the project on: • May 18, 2022, at 2:00 - 3:00 pm EST Contact Anne Roth to sign up to attend the Pre-Proposal Conference (Q&A session).
