The Office of Defense Programs (DP) has the responsibility for ensuring the reliability of the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile by maintaining and enhancing its safety and security for a continued effective deterrent, without underground nuclear testing. DP’s stockpile stewardship and management program ensures that all weapons in the stockpile remain safe, secure, and reliable. One of the major subprograms within DP is the Life Extension Program (LEP), which extends the lifetime of the nation's nuclear stockpile enabling the stockpile and the nuclear security enterprise to respond to threats of the 21st century without developing new weapon systems.
