TECHNOLOGY LICENSING OPPORTUNITY Fire Risk Investigation in 3D A new fire risk modeling software that provides a one-button click to generate scenarios compared to current labor-intensive processes. Opportunity: Idaho National Laboratory (INL), managed and operated by Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC (BEA), is offering the opportunity to enter into a license and/or collaborative research agreement to commercialize FRI3D. This technology transfer opportunity is part of a dedicated effort to convert government-funded research into job opportunities, businesses and ultimately an improved way of life for the American people. Overview: This software was originally developed for ongoing research at INL in dynamic PRA fire modeling. The user interface was developed to assist in modeling and because of the need and request of industry collaboration. Current nuclear power plants have no way to show or visualize fire scenarios directly from their calculation models. Also running incorporating results from physics-based fire simulation tools is cumbersome and time consuming. This tool will save time and help identify and reduce errors in PRA fire modeling. Description: Fire Risk Investigation in 3D (FRI3D) software integrates the nuclear power industry’s current logical model with 3D spatial information and physics-based fire simulation tools. The software first imports the plant’s FRANX fire model along with their plant data model system (PDMS). This gives both the logical relationship between components and subsequent failures more detailed information including what items are physically located in given zones. A GUI displays this information and adds a 3D modeling environment. From here the user can quickly build a 3D model for zones of interest through drag and drop tools. Once complete, each fire scenario for the zone can be seen in 3D space, identifying what effect it has on the items in the zone. New scenarios can also be created or updated quickly by adding or selecting a fire source and running CFAST, a fire simulation tool. The results of the simulation are imported to determine what components fail for the scenario. Benefits: By having access to and integrating the plant models with the fire simulation software, it provides a one-button click to generate scenarios compared to current labor-intensive processes. This allows for more detailed modeling of areas where it was previously cost-prohibitive. Applications: Originally developed for nuclear power plants, but also applicable to any fire simulation needs. Development Status: Currently in beta stage.
