The C-17 System Program Office is contemplating a contract that includes manufacturing and installing replacement skins for the C-17 aft lower fuselage using Government-provided modification drawings and instructions. Standard sheet metal skills such as removing and installing a large quantity of fasteners, non-destructive inspection (NDI), cold working, machining, and application of finish system are required. New skins are to be chemical milled and formed from 2024 aluminum stock approximately 36 feet x 11 feet by 0.2 inches thick. In addition, aircraft shoring, removing and reinstalling hydraulics, wiring, along with various other aircraft systems will be needed. Contractors with facilities containing (or having access to) a hanger or enclosure capable of protecting the aircraft from the environment during the modification is preferred.
