Maintenance Dredging of the Isle au Haut Thoroughfare near Isle au Haut, Maine
The project involves mechanical dredging of approximately 3,355 cubic yards of highly compacted coarse sand, gravel, cobbles, and isolated small boulders from the Isle au Haut Thoroughfare Federal Navigation Project between Isle au Haut and Kimball Island, Maine, in Penobscot Bay. Work is to restore the authorized channel to -6 feet MLLW plus 1 foot required advance maintenance and up to 1 foot allowable overdepth, with one-time advanced maintenance approved for the full 1,200-foot channel. Dredged material will be placed at the Flake Island Disposal Site about 1 nautical mile northwest of the project, benefiting juvenile lobster and cod habitat complexity. A mechanical dredge capable of digging highly compacted coarse sand and gravel is required. The anticipated allowable dredging window is September 15 through April 1 to avoid impacts to spawning shellfish, benthic resources, Essential Fish Habitat, threatened and endangered species, and mobile fishing gear.
