Cape Cod Canal – Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge Repairs The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District is issuing a set aside for certified small business contractors for the Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge Repairs project at the Cape Cod Canal located in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. The NAICS code for the work described below is 237310. The project is planned to be issued in November 2021 and will be set aside for Small Businesses. It should be noted that no work will be allowed on the bridge, except for work that takes place in the bridge spires, from 01 May through 15 October, inclusive of any year. The estimated magnitude of this project is between $250,000 and $500,000. The Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge is one of three Cape Cod Canal crossings and carries a single track of the Massachusetts Coastal Railroad across the Cape Cod Canal in the neighborhood of Buzzards Bay in Bourne, MA. The Mass Coastal Railroad utilizes the bridge to haul waste from Cape Cod typically six days a week. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) provides passenger rail service (the Cape Flyer) on weekends during the summer months from Boston to Hyannis. The work associated with this project involves Replacement of North/South pier wear plates (4 on each side). Replace plates on both the upper and lower centering casting assemblies. Centering casting assemblies including the wear plates are located on the bottom side of the bridge truss (Upper) and on the North and South piers (Lower). Replace wear plates on both the fixed and expansion ends. Total replacement will be 8 plates. Plate fasteners (bolts) will also be replaced as part of this scope. Replacement of the upper and lower Southeast guide rollers and associated bearings, guide roller shaft, adjustment flange, and any locking/mounting hardware are all to be replaced. All guide rollers are to be assessed and adjusted as required to be within defined operational tolerances. Rehabilitation of the steel spire is required. Within each tower the work entails installing bolts at either end of the members where broken welds have occurred, installation of any missing members, replacement of the platform at Level 14, minor repairs to the ladders, and in-kind replacement of bolts connection the double angles that comprise the vertical members of the spires. Replacement of the existing lower span lock motor on both the North and South Piers. Upon completion of each individual item above during construction, the contractor will be required to do immediate acceptance testing to confirm proper operation before the bridge will be allowed to be placed back into normal service. Upon completion of the project as a whole, the bridge will have additional operational acceptance testing performed to confirm all upgrades have been completed in a satisfactory manner and the bridge operates correctly under multiple different environmental conditions.
