The lock and canal, located where Lake Erie drains into the Niagara River, provide a protected waterway around the reefs, rapids, and fast currents that exist in the upstream portion of the Niagara River for vessels of all types. The lock and canal permit pleasure craft and commercial vessels up to 625 feet long and 68 feet wide, with drafts up to 21 feet to travel between Buffalo Harbor and Tonawanda Harbor. In combination with the New York State Erie Canal, they provide pleasure craft and canal-draft vessels an inland water route between Lake Erie and the Atlantic Ocean. Project objectives include, to provide safe and efficient navigation around the upper Niagara River rapids and to operate the lock safely and in a cost-effective. USACE, Buffalo District will soon issue a solicitation for a procurement to fabricate and deliver lock mitre gates to the Black Rock Lock on the Niagara River in Buffalo, NY. The work consists, but is not limited to, fabricating, testing, painting, prestressing and delivery of new lock chamber mitre gate assemblies and spare parts in support of the Black Rock Lock.
