Gavins Point Spillway Gate De-Icing Trailer Gavins Point has identified that the need for a portable, self-contained, easily operable and quick response trailer would be beneficial to the project not only from a maintenance perspective but also with dam safety in mind. We have test operated a few different methods of removing ice from the frozen spillway gates and have found that spraying warm water at higher pressure is the most effective way to quickly remove the ice that is built up between the gate and the side wall that is holding the gate in place and making it inoperable. The trailer being requested is a self-contained, diesel fired heat source and electrical generator unit that can pump freezing lake water into the trailer, heat the water instantly and pump the heated water down to the nozzle operator to spray a heavy stream of warm water at high pressure that will melt/cut through the ice that is holding the spillway gate in place. This method is mobile, easy to use, continuous water flow, and most importantly quick response. (See March 14, 2019). We have found that with high pressure, the time it takes to melt/cut the ice is reduced greatly and also that the operator can remove the ice from 2 gates while being positioned at a single spillway nose pier, thus making the deicing process quicker and easier. Also, with the on board diesel generator, the trailer can be used as an emergency 480v 3-phase electrical source to back feed essential equipment in the event of a power failure. (Spillway Gate Hoist, Admin, Campgrounds, Sewage Lift stations etc.) Hot Water Deicer w ith Trailer, Gavins Point Dam Amendment 1 The solicitation is being amended to reflect changes in to the tank size and response date for quotes. Tank size under Highway Trailer of the solicitation should read "Between 100 and 115 gallon, double walled, carbon steel fuel tank w ith vented cap for fueling both w ater heater and generator".
