The Enhanced Maritime Biological Detection (EMBD) system is a technology upgrade to the existing Joint Biological Point Detection System (JBPDS). The US Navy (USN) is currently integrating EMBD retrofit kits into 135 fielded JBPDS and 40 new ship builds. Once upgraded, the EMBD system will continue fulfilling the Navy’s requirement for an automated sensor to rapidly detect, collect, identify and sample airborne Biological Warfare Agents (BWA). The EMBD consists of five (5) Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) that perform the following core biological defense functions: detection (Rapid Agent Aerosol Detector (RAAD)), collection (Wetted Wall Cyclone (WWC) Collector), identification (Lateral Flow Immunoassay Identifier), sample handling (Fluid Transfer System (FTS)) and local user interface (Computing and Control Subsystem (CCS)). The LRUs are integrated into the Biosuite Enclosure (BSE) and receive conditioned power from the Power Pack. EMBD is controlled locally by the CCS and remotely by the External Controller Subsystem (ECS). EMBD replaced the detector and the computer within the JBPDS but did nothing to address the obsolescence of the other LRUs listed in Table 1. The intent of EMBD is to address the obsolescence of the Collector, Fluid Transfer System (FTS) and Identifier by providing a single hardware solution to replace the functionally of these three (3) LRUs. Please see the attached full request for information to reference Table 1 and remaining details.
