The JLTV is equipped with an AFES in the crew compartment. The AFES is primarily intended to protect the crew in the case of a fire due to a ballistic threat. It does not provide any fire extinguishing capabilities to the engine compartment or other external areas of the vehicle outside of the cab. The cylinders contain environmental friendly fire suppression agent HFC-227ea with scrubbing agent sodium bicarbonate. Cylinders are available in two capacities, conform to DOT standards, and include safety devices such as safety relief valve and anti-recoil device. The extinguishing cylinder is discharged by means of an electrical activation harness. The activation harness is an explosive device and should be handled with care. The solicitation will contain DLAD provision 52.215-9023, Reverse Auction, which allows for the use of a reverse auction as a pricing technique. After the solicitation closes, the contracting officer will determine if a reverse auction will be held.
