During the execution of a scheduled Preventative Maintenance Availability (PMAV), on the USS Milwaukee LCS-5 Ships Service Diesel Generator’s (SSDG’s); it was discovered, the ship’s SSDG’s intercoolers were severely impaired and not operating as designed; causing excessive wear on the system, resulting in higher than recommended operating temperatures. Replacement parts are required to repair the Ships Service SSDG’s. Intercooler Dual Sections need to have the same bolt hole pattern on both the inlet and outlet to match the SHIPS SERVICE DIESEL GENERATOR (SSDG), DIESEL ENGINE, ISOTTA-FRASCHINI MODEL V1708C2; to operate properly. Intercooler dual sections are needed for the rotation of the turbine (caused by the passage of the exhaust gas) turns the compressor, which is mounted on the same shaft but housed in a separate chamber, to draw air in from the atmosphere. The compressor then compresses the air to a higher pressure and delivers it, suitably cooled, to the intercooler, which routes it to the cylinders for combustion. If the wrong Intercooler Dual section is used it would cause catastrophic damage to equipment and personnel due to overheating of the SHIPS SERVICE DIESEL GENERATOR (SSDG), DIESEL ENGINE, ISOTTA-FRASCHINI MODEL V1708C2. Furthermore, not using OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts will void any and all warranties. There are NO suitable substitute parts for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) SSDG’s.
