Specific Technology Areas of Interest Specific Technology Areas of Interest 1. Advanced Manufacturing and Metal Working Processes in support of MRO beginning with raw materials to produce a component, (e.g., design, reverse engineering, reengineering, casting, milling, painting, inspections, etc.). Additive manufacturing and repair, rapid manufacturing and prototyping. The act or process of restoring, reshaping, and repairing existing metal assets using industrial processes such as welding/joining, forming/forging, grinding, machining, drilling, coining, cutting, etc. Techniques to improve holding, fixturing, and setup of parts for machining processes. Techniques for identifying and preventing grinding burns before completion of machining. This could be advances in the machine or grinding wheels themselves, even the cutting fluid. Machining of uneven parts, initial contact vs full contact machining (they need very different machining parameters). For example plated landing gear shafts. Machining replacement for chem-milling after forming. Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) drilling without heat affected zones, including pilot EDM drilling followed by finishing with conventional drilling. 2. Coatings/Corrosion Control Coatings and corrosion control includes the identification, prevention and removal of corrosion on aerospace materials and weapons systems. Technologies for improved corrosion identification will include enhanced optical or infrared examination with computerized data analysis and airframe mapping. Computerized material compatibility and galvanic corrosion prediction of aircraft assemblies utilizing fundamental electrochemical datasets. Technologies developed for improved corrosion prevention of aerospace materials to include cleaning, preservation techniques, temporary protective coatings, organic coatings (e.g. paints, primers, sealants), surface finishing and electroplates (e.g. brush and tank processing), metal (e.g. cold spray) and powder spray technologies. Corrosion removal technologies that are optimized for minimal damage to substrate surfaces. Coating removal processes that do not utilize paint stripping chemicals or produce abrasive media waste (e.g. laser, atmospheric plasma and dry ice). 3. Composites (Non-Metal Materials) MRO of components made of non-metallic material composites (e.g., carbon or polyamide fabric, ceramic, glass, resin, etc.). Similar to Metal Working. 4. Inspection/Test A physical scrutinization of property or documents / a procedure that ascertains effectiveness, value, proper function, integrity or other qualities during MRO. Includes Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI), hydro test. etc. 5. Robotics This technology focus area includes any automated processes that utilizes a robot, to include soft robotics, to perform a task with limited to no human interaction during completion of the task. These systems can include initial pre-programming by an artisan, artificial intelligence, and/or machine learning to perform path planning or various other tasks (i.e. laser de-paint, precision measurements, material handling, etc.). Proposals for this technology space should focus on either replacing a current manual process with an automated robotic process or creating a new automated robotic process for new and emerging requirements. 6. Digital Engineering and Data Analytics to Mitigate Degraders and Improve Readiness Accurate degrader detection, prediction, and mitigation require novel tools. Data fusion, analytics, and digital engineering have gained a lot of attention recently, as data and its associated collection/processing strategies proliferate to maximize the value of information extracted from raw data. In particular, data analytics offers a plethora of possibilities to extract actionable intelligence from recorded aircraft data and in addition, digital engineering provides an opportunity to create new software tools to perform data analytics. Various types of aircraft data (operational, maintenance, etc.), including data collected from a multitude of sensors under modeling, testing, and field conditions, are stored in a variety of databases. Aggregation and analysis of the data result in deriving valuable information to sustain the operational tempo. -Technologies include developing methodologies using digital twin and intelligent decision tools in support of data analytics and enhanced data visualization. Applying artificial intelligence, machine learning techniques, and tools for end-to-end data processing and analytics. Big data analytics leading to prognostic capabilities, enabling advanced detection of impending failure of products. Computational data tools, estimation techniques, fusion algorithms for prediction, and project lifetime (designed vs. remaining useful life) of products. Building dashboards and live updates for shared awareness across the stakeholder community. Developing robust data architecture, data management for rapid fleet support for action requests, and better programmatic (logistics planning and support) decision-making. The desired end state is to develop condition-based maintenance capability: i.e. use sensor and usage data to perform inspections based on conditions as opposed to a schedule. 7. Digital Tracking for Improving Inventory Management, Supply Chain The supply chain encompassing the availability of spare parts and supply items is a critical link that has a profound impact on operational readiness. The DoD mandates the application of technologies to optimize supply chain, providing knowledge-based logistic support to the war fighter. Specifically, there is an urgency to track and monitor the movement of assets in real time. Digital tracking technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID) in combination with an internet of things (sensors, devices, data, networks, and analytics) provides visibility and cyber security through end-to-end solutions. The benefits of digital tracking technologies are: elimination of duplicate orders, improved asset tracking, data capture, inventory management, control and costs, elimination of excess inventory, identification of misplaced parts and avoidance of supply chain disruptions. It will optimize manufacturing, repair, and overhaul (MRO) processes by tracking the parts throughout its life cycle. Most importantly, it enables the timely, accurate delivery of items when and where needed (i.e. on demand), securing supplies en route with control access. Key tenants of digital tracking includes supply chain management, asset tracking and security. Technologies for supply chain management include providing asset visibility, tracking inventory in real time through automated entries; Technologies for asset tracking include mobile computing in conjunction with web technologies/tools; Technologies for security include web –based management tools with granted access to stakeholders for live update, dashboard visualization. Perform audit of the site, customer requirement, identify digital tracking solutions tailored to the items usage, and provide holistic secured end-to-end IOT (internet of technology) solution. Determine the cost-structure (recurring, non-recurring engineering (NRE) cost, other) for the proposed technologies and provide the cost-effective solution for a visibility of assets. Develop an implementation plan based on the environment, tracking reliability, operating procedure, cost structure, and identifying the best way forward. Determine the applicability to other depots and develop common solutions. For the customer approved use case, demonstrate the applicability of digital tracking technology through a pilot effort, determine scale up factors, and perform business case analysis with return on investment (ROI). Develop a cloud-based solution/strategy, provide user access to the system either via mobile app or a web interface. 8. Enhanced Training Technology for Next Generation Aircraft Development of Job Performance Aids (JPA) that include novel technology such as Augmented / Virtual / Mixed Reality of simulated maintenance environments that increase knowledge skills and abilities of maintenance personnel performing complex tasks associated with 4th and 5th generation aircraft. 8.
