Recent experiences in the Virginia Payload Module Concept of Operations Exercise (COOPEX) have demonstrated the enormous value of applying virtual machine technology to deploy actual tactical systems for in-laboratory testing and prototyping. In this scheme, existing tactical software and prototype software is built as virtual machines, software-based computing nodes where the hardware is emulated by an underlying virtual machine hypervisor. With virtualization, multiple virtual machines taking the place of actual physical processors can run on a single physical computer.
