The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport (NUWCDIVNPT) Code 2543 has a requirement for a new virtualization server. Recent experiences in the Virginia Payload Module Concept of Operations Exercise (COOPEX) have demonstrated the enormous value of applying virtual machine technology to deploy actual tactical systems for in-laboratory testing and prototyping. In this scheme, existing tactical software and prototype software is built as virtual machines, software-based computing nodes where the hardware is emulated by an underlying virtual machine hypervisor. With virtualization, multiple virtual machines taking the place of actual physical processors can run on a single physical computer. Achieving the necessary computing density requires a resource-rich computing platform: fast processors, plentiful fast memory, large secondary storage, and fast network connectivity
