Dual Purpose Weather Forecasting Solution
NIWC Atlantic seeks a prototype capability to evaluate and demonstrate a rapidly deployable, integrated, scalable solution for processing and visualizing polar-orbiting satellite data in extremely remote, degraded, disconnected environments such as Antarctica and the South Pole. Current safety-of-flight planning and aviation route forecasting are limited by regional bandwidth constraints, logistical maintenance issues, and proprietary software outputs that hinder open-standard scientific and meteorological collaboration. The prototype must validate a multi-tiered visualization architecture: a lightweight, ultra-low-bandwidth capability to deliver high-priority imagery to severely bandwidth-constrained nodes, paired with a high-fidelity analytical capability for detailed local weather modeling and flight safety assessments. Success will be measured by reliable operation on limited local computing footprints, local ingestion of raw polar-orbiting satellite data without high-bandwidth reachback, translation into non-proprietary open formats, and reduced latency in delivering actionable meteorological visualization. This effort targets performance in austere polar environments where open-standard collaboration and low-bandwidth operations are critical.
