laser system that outputs light at 422.79nm with an output power of at least 500mW for use at the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) within the Precise Time Department, the Clock Development Division. Currently the USNO is investigating atomic clock technology using optical spectroscopy on an atomic beam of calcium. We need to create a cold beam of atoms that will allow us to compare the performance of a thermal (hot) and a cold beam clock. The calcium transition that is used for laser cooling is at a wavelength of 422.79nm, and the amount of laser light required for cooling is close to 1W when the losses from AOMs and fibers are accounted for.
