In September 2020, Naval Station Newport will host the International Seapower Symposium (ISS), a bi-annual event that assembles heads of navies and coast guards from around the globe to discuss international scurity issues and maritime cooperation. Naval Station Newport will use Pier 2 to berth all vessels scheduled for the ISS. Pier 2 must provide a functional and attractive setting for mooring vessels and hosting event activities. The fender system consists of timber piles, driven into the mudline and bolted to a concrete pier deck. Over the past sixty years, the fender system has deteriorated; therefore creating a hazard for incoming vessels. The existing timber fender system has intact, damaged, or missing timber piles. Some timber piles embedded in the mudline have broken off below the water line and are not visible above water, or may be visible only at low tide.
