This requirement is for six (6) Helicopter Engine Wash Pads. The containment pads are required to meet Environmental Protection Agency regulations for Hazardous Material containment of wash water from aircraft engine flushing operations. The flight lines at Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) and Marine Corps Base Kaneohe, Hawaii, (MCBH) are located adjacent to inland water ways. Due to the saltwater corrosive environment the aircraft fly in, the squadrons are required to perform engine washes after every flight or series of flights. Without the containment pads, the engine wash affluent can easily migrate into those water ways causing environmental pollution and potential EPA violations for the U.S. Navy.
