The proposed requirement is a laser system that outputs light at 657.459nm with an output power of at least 700mW for use at the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) within the Precise Time Department, the Clock Development Division. Currently the USNO is investigating atomic clock technology using optical spectroscopy on an atomic beam of calcium. A transition within calcium that can be driven with 657nm laser light serves as the frequency reference. The process of driving this transition requires applying 15mW of light from a high-frequency-stability laser in a physical geometry that satisfies the condition for Ramsey-Borde spectroscopy. Detection of successful excitation of the transition requires efficient collection of the light – individual photons – emitted from the atoms. Please see Sole Source Justification and solicitation.
