Statement of Work: FY21 QETE Procurement 3-Color High Speed Imaging Pyrometry High speed, high sensitivity camera that can be calibrated to perform as a high speed pyrometer for making spatio-temporally resolved flame temperature measurements of propellants and other energetic materials. Digital color camera sensors contain an array of pixels, which are overlaid by a mosaic pattern of colored band pass filters called the color filter array (CFA). Most digital color cameras utilize a RGB type CFA, called the Bayer filter, where Red, Green and Blue filters are arranged in a square grid and superimposed on the array of photosensitive pixels. The working principal of the camera is such that when the light impinges on the Bayer CFA, it transmits photons within the specific wavelength bands of the individual filter, thereby recording only one color at each pixel location. Subsequently, the two missing colors at each pixel is obtained via a process called demosaicing, where the missing color values are interpolated from the adjacent pixels, thereby generating the full RGB vector at each pixel and rendering the color image. Given that each pixel is overlaid by a filter of known transmission, we can use this to our advantage by calibrating for the transmission losses against a known temperature source, thereby converting each square RGB grid into a 3-channel pyrometer. With modern cameras routinely employing over a million pixels, the resulting videos have a high degree of spatial resolution, which can subsequently be processed to obtain the spatially resolved temperature maps, as shown in the attachment. Moreover, the camera requested in the current proposal can record 8400fps at full resolution, effectively providing high spatial and temporal resolution in analyzing the combustion of energetic materials. Moreover, the camera can be fitted with a variety of custom band pass filters to eliminate molecular and atomic emission of any metallic/organic additives that could influence the temperature measurements.
