The objective of this Archaeological Records curation project is to fulfill the Marine Corps' Section 110 responsibilities of the National Historic Preservation Act and enhance the management and overall stewardship of Charlesfort-Santa Elena NHL. It will enable MCRDPI to demonstrate compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (PL 89-665) as amended, the Archeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1979 (PL 93-291) as amended, and 36 CFR Part 79 regarding the Curation of Federally-owned and Administered Archaeological Collections, specifically Complete and Accurate Records (79.9(b)(1)) derived from archaeological investigations on Federal property. By state law, SCIAA is also the authority for records archiving and curation standards. Pursuant to S.C. Code of Laws 60-13-210, the Director of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) is responsible to the State for curating the archaeological collections and setting curation standards and policy. These standards are set forth in the USC/SCIAA’s Curation, Loan, and Access Policy (2005).
