Lightweight Universal Codec (LUC)
DARPA's LUC program aims to develop a universal encoder-decoder (codec) capable of using any known or future error correction code, leveraging the GRAND study to enable adaptive, on-the-fly code changes. The codec will pair an encoder with a GRAND-implementing decoder to optimize link budgets and mission tasks, targeting improved efficiency, security, throughput, and interoperability. Success will be measured by code universality, link budget improvement, and performance in heterogeneous networks. The program will be executed at the unclassified level, with performer implementations not exceeding Controlled Unclassified Information. Performers may select their own target communication systems for integration, with no specified timelines, budget amounts, or performance location mentioned.
