UPDATED 11 August 2020 Please note the updated response date from 12 August 2020 to 18 August 2020. Additionally, please see below for questions and answers: Question: Are there any plans to incorporate other types of testing in preparation for NIF? Would the desire be to simply test material coupons, or would the hope be to eventually conduct testing on a full aero shell or nose tip? Answer: The Air Force currently has no plans to test material in preparation for the NIF tests. The NIF tests will be coupon tests. Following NIF testing, the Air Force plans to perform LIHE and Z machine testing. LIHE could be coupon samples or full up components and the Z-machine will also be coupon samples. These tests would likely incorporate full aeroshells or nose tips. The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) Directorate, Mk21A Branch (AFNWC/NXXM) is releasing a request for Information (RFI) for a Nuclear Hardness and Survivability (NH&S) effort. This effort is to model, simulate, test, and evaluate the nuclear hardness and survivability of the Mk21A reentry vehicle (RV) in relevant environments to enable design, development, test and production of the Mk21A RV. Please see attachement for further details.
