Heat treatment process effects material mechanical structure and grains. Most metals can be heat treated for the purpose of improving mechanical properties such as tensile and yield strength. This is accomplished due to the heat treatment fundamentally altering the micro-structure of the material. The purpose of the ovens in the Metals Tech section, is to alter the mechanical properties of various metals to achieve a desired temper or strength depending on the aircraft or support equipment specification. This asset is utilized several times a week for countless maintenance actions ensuring there are available aircraft to fill the wings mission requirements. Having the ability to alter the a materials mechanical properties at a moment’s notice is priceless, and without it aircraft downtime would double or even triple as the section would have to special order the needed material and wait for delivery.
