Travis AFB, David Grant Medical Center Blood Bank requires an X-ray Blood Irradiator to treat blood and blood components. The blood irradiator utilizes x-ray radiation to treat blood and blood components to prevent Graft versus Host Disease (GVH). This is important in treating immunocompromised patients such as: - Infants (particularly premature) up to 4 months of age, Intrauterine transfusion and/or neonatal exchange transfusion recipients - Congenital immunodeficiency disorders of cellular immunity (i.e., SCIO, DiGeorge) - Hematology/Oncology (hematologic malignancies or solid tumors: neuroblastomas, sarcoma, Hodgkin disease, etc.) - Peripheral blood stem cell/marrow transplantation.
