DARPA has developed a non-invasive coherent optical system for recording neural signals in humans and seeks to expand it into revolutionary non-invasive brain-computer interfaces through its Firefox program. The program solicits approaches to overcome two key hurdles: enabling dynamic rastering/scanning of the incoming coherent optical signal to target multiple regions of interest, and developing new data processing architectures beyond the digital domain to handle high data rates and computational demands. The ultimate goal is a 100-channel, non-invasive BCI with 50-micron spatial and 100-microsecond temporal resolution.
