DARPA is seeking proposals to design a protein complex that can be expressed in living cells to synthesize DNA or RNA sequences in direct response to optical signals, enabling template-free, massless genetic information transfer. The program has two main research objectives: achieving this core optical synthesis capability and developing error mitigation methods for high-fidelity synthesis. The acquisition will proceed through a two-stage process starting with written abstracts, followed by invitations for an Oral Proposal Package at DARPA.
