Title: B120 Ceiling Replacement Location of Work: Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, CT Description of Work: Building 120 is a 10,475 square foot, two-story structure originally built in 1945 that houses a natatorium. The building was originally constructed with a reinforced concrete slab in the pool area, brick masonry walls and a wood framed gable roof with timber trusses. The roof was completely rebuilt in 1985 using galvanized steel trusses, wood purlins, and plywood deck with asphalt shingles. The ceiling in the pool area, rebuilt in 2002, consists of acoustic tile with a vapor barrier and rigid insulation laid on top. The ceiling is suspended by the wood roof purlins using stainless steel wire. The mechanical systems servicing the pool area were also replaced as part of the 2002 renovation. The vapor barrier between the pool and the attic space above is compromised. As a result the warm, humid air from the pool is leaking into the attic space and causing condensation problems. Condensation forms on the underside of the roof when it is colder outside and subsequently leaks onto the ceiling structure below. In addition to chemicals leaching from the wood into the pool, the structural integrity of the ceiling has been affected. Refer to the NAVFAC Report “Building 120 – Pool Ceiling and Roof Engineering Study and Assessment” included in Part 6 for more detailed findings. The scope of work is to remove the drop ceiling in the pool area, insulate the roof assembly to eliminate the condensation on the interior of the roof, and provide a ceiling for the exposed roof. This may require the addition of continuous insulation on top of the existing roof deck or replacing the existing roof assembly. Additionally, the existing mechanical ducts and lighting are to be replaced with exposed ductwork and LED lighting to suit the reconfigured space.
